First Aid Reference Guides
Can anyone recommend a decent "pocket" sized first aid reference guide. (preferrably one that is still in print.) I am putting together some first aid kits for when shtf and I plan on giving one to each of my siblings. I'd like to include some type of basic manual on first aid to go in the box, but I don't want it to be too large.

Re: First Aid Reference Guides
A good pocket size is tough to find. This one is 8" x 6". I was considering my old scout merit badge pamphlet for a level 1, but for $10 this one looks really good. Think I'll get it. Thanks for asking.

Re: First Aid Reference Guides
"A Comprehensive guide to Wilderness and Travel Medicine" by Eric Weiss, M.D.
This is a great little book packed with info. It's about the size of a pack of cards. I am a retired paramedic and found this book a nice read with lots of good info. Having said that, this was designed for wilderness travel, so much of the topics revolved around those types of incidents, including snakebite, exposure, etc. But it covers a full range of things- constipation, traveler's diarrhea, abscesses, how to fix dislocated fingers, etc. and also assumes help may not be immediately available. It even contains some antibiotic instructions. I should also say that this book is included with some Adventure Medical Kits that start at around $25. I bought the "light and fast" kit on sale for $19.95, which included this book. The book made it a good deal. So you might want to consider buying the kits that include the book instead of the book alone. Edit: I was wrong on the size. It is about 6" x4" So make that two packs of cards, side by side. Still highly reccomended |
Re: First Aid Reference Guides
The EMT and Paramedic flip books are good along with the drug guides they are designed to fit in to pockets but you had better know the info beforehand or it will look like greek they are intended to be quick reference charts not how to's.
Here is an example of what I am talking about. And yes I used them when I was an EMT. |
Re: First Aid Reference Guides
while not quite pocket size at 5.5"x8.5", Wilderness First Aid; Emergency Care for Remote Locations has a ton of information split into categories by chapter, as well as good pictures, and decent illustrations.
also, not really a first aid book by definition, but i learned a lot from Last Breath: Cautionary Tales from the Edge of Human Endurance. |
